Hope After the Dark

Less than two weeks into the New Year
the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince was rocked
by an earthquake which measured seven point zero magnitude
on the moment magnitude scale
Even though the images in the media were heartbreaking
and it seemed like hope was lost
She found herself glued to the television
realizing how fragile hope can really be
There one minute and dashed the next

She then saw video of a group of Haitians singing and dancing
it brought her to tears and she couldn’t help thinking
if she lost friends and loved ones in an earthquake the
last thing she’d want to be doing is singing and dancing
While watching the story of this tragedy unfold through the camera’s eye
she’s learned that the human spirit is anything but breakable

She knows the scars will never heal but
there will come a time when those who have lost
people they care about
can turn their pain into something of beauty
That’s when the people of Haiti will find
hope after the dark
